End of Life Care in Makawao

Saying goodbye to a loved one is never easy – whether two-legged or four. Our pets become a part of our family. As such, deciding when it’s time to let them go can be one of the most difficult and emotional decisions one must ever face. At Makawao Veterinary Clinic, we understand how hard this can be, because we’ve been in your shoes. Each of us has had to make the difficult choice of when to let go and experienced the pain and grief of those final moments.

When the time comes to relieve your furry family member of his or her suffering, we want you to know that our compassionate team will be here to help in that process. Euthanasia appointments are scheduled strategically to allow you to spend as much time as you need with your loved one and ensure that those final moments are quiet, peaceful, and uninterrupted.

When it’s time, an IV catheter will be placed in the vein to allow easy access to administer the solutions. Sedation is typically administered prior to euthanasia to help relax your pet. The entire process of passing takes just a few minutes and you can stay with your pet during this time, or if you prefer, a member of our staff will step in to provide comfort and love on your behalf.

At Makawao Veterinary Clinic, we run an environmentally friendly crematorium called Paws Forever Maui. With this service, you can choose individual cremation – meaning you will receive your pet’s individual remains, or you can choose communal cremation.

Communal cremation is where ashes are not delivered back to the owner. Instead, the ashes are spread among the trees in a native forest restoration project in Keokea overlooking the ocean. Paws Forever Maui also has several beautiful urns to choose from, including some made with native woods by local artists.
